Fail.

Twice this week, I had "moments" (like the dremmel/curling iron moment mentioned here)... I should be a regular contributor to the Fail Blog. It's been a challenging week ;)
1. Earlier this week, Winnipeg had a HUGE downpour that flooded the streets and I was out doing errends at the time, in my rental car (my cars still in the shop from the lady backing into it). I was on my way home and there was a lady walking in heels with a dinky umbrella because her car had brokedown. I offered her a ride and she accepted. While she was on the phone canceling her plans, I was trecking through deep lakes on the road and was worried I'd flood the car and I panicked. In a moment of genius, I thought I should drive on the boulavard because it was above 'the lake'. Hmmm. So I jerked the wheel right and attempted to get up on the boulavard. Due to the panic and the pouring rain, I forgot that curbs are still blunt under the water (ie. water is not a ramp)... and I shaved a thick piece of rubber off the tire and redesigned the hubcap. The lady I was driving was nicely distracted by her phone call and didn't mention the big bump or my sudden explicitives. We drove on and I didn't say a thing more.
* This vaguely reminds me of the time I was on a 2hr highway drive home alone, enjoying the blue sky and clouds, when I hit the gravel shoulder, slammed on the brakes in a panic, 360'd my car 2.5 times, and pulled over to regather and hyperventilate. I saw cars were coming and I didn't want to explain what caused my accident, so I pulled out my dead cell phone from the glovebox and made fake calls till they passed.
2. Today I was tempted to order a pizza for supper. I've been doing really good lately with eating healthy and it was an internal war over whether or not I should. My shrinking tummy encouraged me to keep it up and so decided to make baked salmon, tomato salad and pasta. I boiled the water, I defrosted the fish and had the glass baking dish ready to use. As I was waiting, I did some dishes. Lola was laying peacefully by my feet and I was rinsing the last dish, proud of my domesticness when I suddenly jumped and screamed. There was an explosion on my stove-- I'd turned on the wrong element to boil water and the glass dish heated and burst into pieces. Shards of glass shot clear across the kitchen, everywhere! Luckily Lola and myself didn't get hit by any of them and I got Lola out of the room quickly... I was so shook! Freaky situation, I'll double check my elements for now on!!! So glad we didn't get hurt. Should have ordered pizza.

Q. What's your most epic or drastic 'fail'? ;)
This could get funny!

  1. Oh wow. So glad you and Lola are okay!
Had to giggle at your going up the curb because you figured the water would act as a ramp, well ya know, not thinking about the fact it doesn't. Sometimes when Im washing up these weird shaped glasses we have full own and almost fall back into the sink but get caught on our metal drying rack - and instead of pulling it back the way it fell in - I try to pull it through the rack and it breaks. I have done this, twice. It's the stupidest thing but my mind is saying "it's wet, it'll slip through" Um no, it wont, its glass and metal. HAHAHA.

Well done on not ordering the pizza though, seriously. I need to do this more. Choose the healthy option. Inspiring you are. :)

Here's hoping you have a lot more WINS to write about soon xx

  2. hehe, you get me Ebony... that's something I would do too ;) I think I just need to slow down and double think my moves these days ;)

  3. So you can't heat up glass?!!? Yikes, I'd better keep my eye on the stove if I ever try that.

  4. I'd used the dish in the oven before... it's because it was empty and the heat was on high. It happened to my mom once with Coral dishware, i think it'll probably happen to anything breakable when it's heated alone :/

  5. I've done that with the hob before... only I'd left an oven glove on the stove and the bloody thing caught fire (eventually, it was an electric hob so took ages for it to burn). I was sat in the next room (I tend not to watch when bringing potatoes to the boil) and my ex was like "is something burning?" and I was all "no, it's just the pan.." until the house was filled with acrid smoke and we had to get Pickle outside while my smouldering oven glove was drowning in the sink and my potatoes remained unboiled.

    Fail.

  6. oh gosh, lots of fails. most recently, i drove over this HUGE bump. it was awful. i had my grandma in the car, which made matters so much worse. I normally slow down before going over this bump but the light was turning yellow and my grandma had to go to the bathroom, so i went. I was trying to get through the light. I've never been thrown so high up in the air and my grandma said something like "oh my gosh, my teeth!"....not sure what I did to her teeth lol.

    Big fail...

  8. yowza! so glad you and lola are ok. i have those moments often. most recently i baked my plastic dehydrator sheets. i use my oven for storage and forget to check it before preheating. not good.

i believe those disasters are signs to stay focused in the present. whenever i do something careless it's usually because i'm caught up in my head, thinking of the past or future. i actually play soft music in my kitchen to calm me sometimes, so i'm not so quick and clutzy!

love your blog by the way.=)

  9. Oh no! Glad you and Lola are okay - I dropped a glass dish (full of pasta salad) in the middle of a dinner party a couple of weeks ago. It shattered all over the kitchen just as we were preparing to sing 'happy birthday' in the other room..

My biggest fail this week has been having laryngitis all week and deciding, in my weakened state, I just totally needed to flip my mattress. I coughed so hard that I fell over and put half my hand through the slats on my bed.. half my hand, because my thumb hit the slat and is now a lovely shade of purplish-black.

  10. my mama brain isn't recalling specifics as of late but you remember my story of melting my Martha Stewart kettle..then there was the pie dish sitting on one of our 'burners' that exploded for the same reason. He was trying to heat our new kettle and got the wrong burner. There was the time I forgot to reattach the car seat base when moving it back into our car and Sebastian's whole seat tipped over sideways on my way home from the mall. SCARY! I had to pull over right away, get out of the car, run around to the other side, pull him back up and settle us both down.
Oh, and this happened to Ruby the other day, too, except the base was in, just not tight enough...
    She hardly noticed, though.
Um...I'm sure I've got a lengthy list of close calls. Do I believe in guardian angels? I should!

  11. Oh! Too many to mention! But I definitely did the glass dish thing once. It was right before I had to go to class, too, so instead of being able to make lunch I had to clean up glass, and I was way late to class :/ (not unusual though...)

  12. Oh, honey, I've had so many similar fails! I can totally relate! I've also had a few while driving--one time I wasn't paying attention, and spazzed out and rubbed my car against a metal fence on the side of the road, bending my rim. More embarrassingly, a few miles down the road, a truck honked at me till I pulled over, to notify me that my wheel was messed up. Another big one that comes to mind was when I worked (temporarily, haha, you'll see why) in the deli at the grocery store where I was previously a cashier--I was cleaning the deli slicer, and I did the stupidest thing, leaving it on whole running a washrag along the blade, to clean it (others did this, I swear, so even though we were supposed to turn it off, it was easier/faster to leave it on while cleaning). I spaced out, and next thing I know, my hand feels warm, and blood is filling my glove. I wasn't actually sure at first how much I'd cut, and was horrified. I ran to the manager and said "I did something REALLY stupid..." Luckily, it was only the tip of one finger, and years later, it's just a little mis-shapen. But boy did I hear it for that one. For a while after, the guys I worked with would bring me pieces of lunchmeat and say they'd found my finger, har har har.

  13. Oh my goodness! Glad everyone's okay! I often have fails in the kitchen including multiple fires: one of the stove and one in the microwave. Apparently foil from take out that doesn't look like foil but still is should NOT go in the microwave. I only wish I could say I was under the influence which I of course was not. HA.

  14. LA, you are so cute! I giggled reading your first "fail" story. It's so funny that you swore and then acted like nothing happened. Oh man!

Glad you are OK with the dish exploding... whew!

  17. Glad you guys are OK!!
    Exploding objects in kitchens.......scarey!!
Been there with a lighter while we lived in London. They have strange ovens over there + the grill sits above the top of the oven + one of our flatmates left a lighter on top of the grill while making some toasties + it was a small kitchen with 4 of us in it at the time + next minute BOOM.....the lighter exploded + flew around the kitchen!! It happened so fast we couldn't work out what happened!! But man we got a HUGE fright!!
I've done the baby thing like Rachel......gone around the corner + wondered why my baby was sailing across the backseat in his carseat!!
My husband I brought a really cool picture from the Portabello Markets in London + when we got home to NZ I went to hang it up in our house + I found a spare nail hanging out of the wall (well what I thought was a nail) + proudly hung my pic for it only to fall to the ground + smash!! It was ruined + couldn't be mended!! It was not a nail but a carpet tack that the previous owners had put in the wall!!!?? Kev still gives me grieve about it only 14yrs on!!
Sometimes it good to fail cause we when look back on that day we can laugh at ourselves!!

  18. Looks like we all have these kinda stories ;)

"My teeth" ...made me LOL :)]

Rachel, one time I had my twin nieces in the back seat of my old car... and the doors nutoriously didn't stay shut. As I turned the corner, the door flew open and my sister and I freaked out! It happened twice and that was then end of me taking them in that car ;)

Katie, this is the recipe for the Tomato Salad in the pic :) It's SO SO Yummy, especially if you're a tomato addict :) You can use just red tomatoes if that's what you have on hand :)

  19. I have a bunch of embarrassing stories but this might be the most dangerous... I was lighting the gas grill for my mom and I found out the ignition light wasn't working, so I took a lighter and went to light it from underneath the grill... well.... let's just say I had the gas on for a little too long... There was a giant flame that came at me so quick, it burned off all my arm hair! I wasn't hurt, just shaken.. and we got a new grill soon after.

  21. the biggest epic fail i can think of right off was when i was 15. i had just gotten my learners permit but hadnt driven much. my older brother woke me up one morning saying he had gotten our dad's truck stuck in the mud in the woods, and he needed help pulling it out (with dad's jeep cheroke). long story short, he said, "ok, when i give you the signal, floor it and yank this truck out." i floored it, but i had it in reverse.. so i smashed the cheroke into the truck.. i went back home and fell into dad's arms, crying. *ooh the good ol days* lol

  22. oh my goodness i've done very similar things.
i got in my parked car at a mall, and proceeded to pull through (instead of backing out) because no one was parked in front of me, and drove right over top one of those parking curbs. i have a beetle and it caused quite a bit of damage!
and just a few weeks ago, i was cooking and turned on the wrong element but instead of a glass pan it was this plastic pepper shaker. i was in the living room letting everything cook and all of a sudden there was all this smoke, a really bad smell, and a mini crackling fire on our stove.

  23. right after i got my home espresso machine i put the used HOT coffee/espresso grounds in the TRASH CAN. i obviously wasn't thinking about the fact that flies love warm and wet areas to lay their eggs. i'll spare you the disgusting details, but let's just say i was chasing flies out of my apartment for the next several weeks.

i put the used grounds in the sink now. lol.

  24. My first day of driving in the "city" at 16 years old was memorable. I was with one of my friends and we went to the ATM and there was this piece on the machine that you opened to put your card in. Well, let's just say that I forgot to close it so when I drove off I broke it completely off! Then later that same day I drove up an off ramp from the highway thinking I was going the right way....thank goodness it was closed at the top for construction!! Thankfully I am a better driver now. :) Ali

  25. I think my biggest one to date was when I was listening to my ipod and cutting something out from newspaper. Suddenly my music stopped playing and I realized I cut through my headphone cord.

  26. This isn't my most epic fail, but it is my most epic fail for the weekend:
John and I were going down the beach, and I looked over to the truck driving next to us. There was no one in it. At all. And it was still driving. I grabbed John's arm saying, "Do you see that! How on EARTH is the truck driving with no one in it!?" And as the words are coming out of my mouth I realized that it was being towed by an RV a few feet in front. I haven't heard the end of it.

  28. i had a good one just today!
i was in the lunchroom at my (very new) job and my boss popped in and quickly asked if i could pop a bag of popcorn in the microwave and bring it back up to our desks when my break was over. so... i put the bag in the microwave and turned it on for the usual amount of time... then i decided to leave and go to the bathroom... not even thinking about the fact that i should watch it and wait for the popping to slow, so it won't burn, etc (and i make popcorn ALL the time, so i REALLY should know better)... so of course after i return from the bathroom (which is a long way away and on a different floor) guess what happened? not only did i TORCH the popcorn but i also RUINED the entire microwave! talk about making a good impression at my new job - the genius who doesn't know how to pop popcorn. yup, that's me! i suppose i should be thankful i did burn down the entire office though.
